Rurouni Kenshin is a Japanese anime manga series that was written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It was published by Shueisha. This anime show has 94 episodes. It tells a story that begins during the 11th year of the Meiji period in Japan. There was a former assassin from the Bakumatsu known as Hitokiri Battosai the manslayer. He was undefeated that no one can stop him. After his work against the bakufu, Hitokiri Battosai disappears to become Himura Kenshin: a wandering swordsman who protects the people of Japan and vow to never kill. He wanders around to escape his dark past until he met a woman named Kaoru. Despite that she knows about Kenshin’s past, she offer him to stay at her dojo and she knows that he’s peace-loving, not cold-hearted. He became friends with Sanosuke Sagara: a former Sekihō Army member, Yahiko Myojin, an orphan from a samurai family who is also living with Kaoru as her student; and a doctor named Megumi Takani. Kenshin has been dealing with old and new enemies including Aoshi Shinomori: the former leader of the Oniwabanshu and Saito Hajime: a rival from the Bakumatsu turned police officer.
Himura Kenshin, Kamiya Kaoru, Sagara Sanosuke, Takani Megumi, Myojin Yahiko, Shinomori Aoshi, Makimachi Misao and Saito Hajime
I like Kenshin’s character when he acts funny and serious at the same time. He said something that a sword is a weapon, the art of sportsmanship is learning how to kill and that is the truth. He uses his sword to protect the innocent. He uses his lighting speed and sword techniques. He has no attachment of the name Battosai the manslayer. He only fights bad guys until they admit defeat. If anyone hurts the innocent, the bad guys pay for their crimes and they’ll live with the shame. He fought the corrupt police officers who hurts the innocent people. He was a wandering samurai until he made lots of friends. He has fought Saito, Sanosuke and Aoshi but now they formed an alliance.

Kenshin vs Saito
My favorite fight of this show that I enjoyed was Kenshin Himura (the kind swordsman) vs Saito Hajime (the former general). This rivalry was not about someone who wants to rule Japan or take revenge against the Meiji Government. It’s just a personal feud. They’re only fighting each other to see who is the better warrior. For that, it became the most intense rivalry. Saito also incredible strength in hand to hand combat and his sword techniques. They were fighting inside the Kamiya Dojo and push themselves to their limit. Saito has incredible stamina and instant recovery but still manage to fight. The fight was intense that Kenshin has to go battosai on Saito to keep up with him. Toshimichi Okubo has stop the fight but he begs Kenshin and Saito for their help to save the nation. The match ended in a draw and Saito wants to settle the score against Kenshin when they fight again.
Kenshin vs Sanosuke
Sanosuke has reunites with his old friend from the Sekihoutai, Katsu. Katsu wants revenge towards the Meiji administration for what they did to their former organization and their founder and surrogate father, Sagara Sozo. Katsu manages to make a warehouse full of explosives and convinces Sanosuke to bomb a government building. Sanosuke’s still blinded by his rage and he decided to fight Kenshin but he’s straight forward without shame with a strong will to fight. He wanted to defeat Battosai the mayslayer. He uses the Zanbatou: the largest sword that was created a long time ago in order to slay the enemy with one swing. No one has master it due to its weigh and size but Sanosuke can handle the Zanbatou and still be fast. Kenshin can read his opponent’s emotions to anticipate how they will attack. Sanosuke continues to fight despite that he takes critical damage from Kenshin. Despite he humiliated Sanosuke when they fight, Sanosuke gave everything he has but he’s no match for Kenshin. He was holding back against Sanosuke but he still humiliates him but he didn’t report him or Katsu to the authorities out of their friendship and he wants to give people a second chance at life. Sanosuke has become a valuable ally and friend to Kenshin. Sanosuke may have lost the Zanbatou but he can still fight using his physical strength.
Kenshin vs Aoshi
Kenshin challenges another swordsman named Aoshi Shinomori: the leader of the Oniwabanshu who are being used as hired gun for Takeda. He wanted to beat Kenshin and proves that he’s the better swordsman than him. They just keep fighting for the sake of fighting. He gives Kenshin a lot of problem when they first started fighting. Aoshi uses the smaller kodachi because it’s consider himself as a ninja. The lightness and size of the smaller kodachi allows him to use punches and kicks allowing him to use his skills. Because of the size of his sword, he has the best reaction times for both offense and defense. Kenshin grips his Sakabato sword above the scabbard for quicker defense and countering. He uses the sheath as a shield. He found a way to counter his move by watching the blade bareheaded and pushing the grip of the sword to Aoshi’s throat. Kenshin has a clean victory against Aoshi.
Kenshin vs Udo Jin-e
Kenshin has fought the first boss of the anime series named Udo Jin-e: a fellow hitokiri. Udo Jin-e wanted Kenshin to reveal his inner killer side. The battle was at stake as he’s taken Kaoru hostage and she was paralyzed with poison. If Kenshin doesn’t defeat him on time, Kaoru will die. Because of Kaoru’s presence and support, Kenshin has defeated him with his batto-jutsu technique. Jin-e doesn’t want to live with the shame of losing and he ended his life by seppuku.
Kenshin (with Sanosuke, Saito and Aoshi) vs Shishio
As Kenshin’s having a difficult battle against Shishio, Saito, Aoshi and Sanosuke has come to help him out, but Shishio makes too easy when he beats Kenshin’s allies. He is a well-rounded fighter and was fully prepared. Shishio can fight without his sword against Sanosuke, and he also shows his readiness by having a steel protector in his bandana while Saito strikes him in the head. This fight shows Shishio’s knowledge of fighting and physics by having his sword chipped where if he collides it with the ground, he can make flames. After Kenshin’s determination and his skills finally emerge as the final victory with superior technique. Shishio has accept his defeat like a man but due to the time limit of his body without cooling down, he was consumed by flames. He dies with his lover and his business associate plus they all went to Hell.
I used to watch this anime show on Toonami when I was a child and I love the series. It has lots of funny, silly moments, serious moments and nonstop sword fighting. I enjoyed watching the incredible sword fight action of Kenshin against his foes. He uses his reverse blade to protect not kill. I enjoyed watching and learning history from historical anime shows. The sword is used to protect not kill. Kenshin has change his ways and become a hero that protects the innocent. I learned that everyone can change that can still let go of their dark past. I thank Kenshin for teaching me that. I consider Kenshin as my favorite character of Rurouni Kenshin along with Sanosuke, Saito, Kaoru, and Yahiko. This is one of my favorite anime shows along with Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho. One of the greatest samurai anime show that I’ve ever seen.
